Nerd Hobbies – What do Nerds get up to?

warhammer

I’m a bona fide nerd. And there’s nothing wrong with that.

When I was younger, I used to get concerned about being a little bit nerdy. But as I’ve grown older, I’ve settled into my nerdiness, and eventually accepted the fact that I’m always going to be a little bit of a geek.

Of course, I’m not alone. Being a nerd use to be a death sentence at school and college. But nowadays, being a nerd is nowhere near as uncool as it was in the past. Sure, at school you might still get guys picking on you occasionally.. but they won’t be picking on you when you’re their boss 10 years later.

As a programmer, I need to keep myself occupied outside of coding. Otherwise, I’d just go nuts. At the end of a long day, there are a few hobbies that I partake in to unwind.

Laser Tag

One of the major issues with being a programmer is that you aren’t getting any exercise throughout the daytime. The main way that I try to combat this is by doing laser tag at least once a week. Usually, me and a few buddies will head down to Laser Quest and blast out a few games.

When I don’t have the chance to get down to an indoor laser tag area, sometimes I just play at home with the kids. I picked up some pretty good laser tag toys off of Amazon. They’re not perfect, but they work well for their purpose and they keep the kids happy. Plus, it gets them (and me!) outside for a few hours too.

TV Series

Like any honourable nerd will tell you, watching TV series is part of life. The ability to take yourself into another reality through the medium of television is important, and there are some TV series that do just that. Here’s a few of my favorites.

  • Star Trek – I don’t need to say much about Star Trek. It’s practically the nerd bible, and any respectable nerd will be getting their Star trek fix too.
  • Game of Thrones – An avid reader of the books when they came out, I was pessimistic when I saw that Thrones was going to make it onto the big screen. I was wrong. It’s turned into one of the biggest TV shows of all time, and I just cannot wait for the finale.
  • Stranger Things – Watching Stranger Things gives me a BTTF vibe – a nice nostalgic feeling that I haven’t gotten in a while when watching a TV show. Although I didn’t think the second season was as good as the first season, I was definitely still impressed – especially by the acting of some of the younger kids in the show. I can’t wait for season three.
  • Anime – Unlike most people who seem to have got on the anime trend recently, I’ve been watching anime for decades. Ever since Cowboy Bebop premiered in the late 90s, that’s it – I was hooked.

Video Games

I have to be careful with video games as they can be highly addictive! So, I don’t play them as much as I used to, especially when they first came out 20 years ago.

In terms of video games, my favorites have always been the old Metal Gear Solid Games, especially MGS2. When it was released, they upgrade from the first games (which is still magnificent) was so dramatic that I just couldn’t believe the difference in graphics between the two.

I’m also looking forward to Last of Us 2 coming out next summer as well, which is another of the most anticipated games of the year. Hopefully, Naughty Dog give the people what they want.

Turn Based Games

Turn based games are one of my favorite ways to spend the day. Even now as I get older, one of the most relaving things for me to do is to play a good turn based game. Warhammer remains one of my favorites.

No comic books?!

Okay, maybe I’m not the uber nerd I thought I was, but I was never into comic books as much as some of my friends. I think this has been made worse by the abundance of superhero movie that have came out which I’m, quite frankly, not interested in at all.
